Silver Arrows Star at Goodwood
The 150,000 attendees at this year’s 17th annual Goodwood Festival of Speed were treated to a visual and aural extravaganza that included no less than 14 “Silver Arrows” from Mercedes and Auto Union and a dozen Porsche 917s among a wide-ranging entry of 350 vehicles that, collectively, were said to be valued at more than US$420 million.

New Era for Historic Racing?
A new organization, Historic Motorsports Productions, is seeking to raise the game of vintage and historic racing in North America to match its demographic. The group’s three principals—three-time National Champion and 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, Just Marketing founder Zak Brown, and long-time vintage racer and entrepreneur Peter Stoneberg—made their initial presentation to potential supporters at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Thursday of the Monterey Historics weekend. During the meeting they outlined their basic plan for a series of vintage festivals at historic motorsports venues across the continent.

Seven New Hall of Famers
Al Unser Jr., David Hobbs, and Les Richter headline the 2009 class of inductees to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America during the Hall’s annual August induction ceremonies at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit.

Trans-Am Tribute Set
The Petersen Automotive Museum and Checkered Flag 200, the museum’s premier membership group, will present another gala tribute this November in honor of the SCCA’s Trans-American Sedan Championship. “Tribute to Trans-Am” will take place November 12, beginning with a 6 p.m. cocktail reception, followed by dinner.

Petty for Amelia 2010
Richard Petty will serve as the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance Honorary Chairman for 2010. The seven-time NASCAR champion, winner of 200 races, including a record seven Daytona 500s, will be helping “The Amelia” celebrate its 15th anniversary. In a world of standout competitors, Petty is widely considered the greatest NASCAR driver of all time.

In early July, the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA), sent an email to its membership informing them that Steve Earle and his company General Racing, Ltd., would no longer be organizing the famed Monterey peninsula event that Earle founded in 1974.

Saratoga Honors NART, Posey
Luigi Chinetti’s iconic North American Racing Team—represented by Luigi Chinetti Jr.—and several of its legendary drivers, including Sam Posey and Denise McCluggage, will be honored at the Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival, presented by the Saratoga Automobile Museum and Saratoga Performing Arts Center in the scenic Saratoga Springs-Lake George, New York area, September 10-12.

Legends of Riverside II
Aiming to build on the foundation of a successful inaugural, the second Legends of Riverside event has been scheduled for the weekend of March 26-28, 2010. Part film festival, part gala, and part reunion, the renewal of this year’s sold-out weekend should once again draw a fine collection of racing heroes and historic machines to Doug Magnon’s Riverside International Automotive Museum.

Jaguar Museum Reopens
The famous Jaguar museum in Coventry, England, has been re-launched following the renaming of the Trust that owns it and the reopening of the famous gates on Browns Lane to the public. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (“JDHT”), founded in 1983 as an independent educational charity, has been restructured and renamed Jaguar Heritage. The museum holds a small but unique and valuable display of cars from the extensive Jaguar collection.

2010 GP de Monaco Historique
The Automobile Club de Monaco has announced that the seventh Grand Prix Monaco Historique has been scheduled for May 8-9, 2010. The event will precede the 68th Grand Prix de Monaco by two weeks in order to allow both groups ample time to access the paddock area of the circuit without impeding the other.

Sir Stirling’s Golden Helmet
When Sir Stirling Moss drove his Vanwall to victory in the 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree—assisted, of course, by Tony Brooks—he became the first British driver to win his home Grand Prix in a British car. Since that historic day, the helmet and goggles he wore have been transformed into their own piece of motor racing history, and are to be the centerpiece of the memorabilia section of the Bonhams Auction at the Goodwood Revival, in September.
