Fairmont Butte Update
The February 6 public hearing concerning Tom Malloy’s proposed Fairmont Butte Motorsports Park northwest of Los Angeles generated so much participation that a further hearing will now take place on March 24 at the Hall of Records in downtown L.A.

The room arranged for the Feb. 6 hearing was of insufficient size to handle the crowd in attendance, so those making presentations were forced to rotate in and out of the room. Consequently, the Regional Planning Department’s Wayne Rew decided to extend the process with a further hearing so all parties would have an opportunity to speak.

While opposition to the project had been expected from environmental groups—whose concerns Malloy is prepared to accommodate—among those opposing the plan were representatives of Willow Springs Raceway in nearby Rosamond. Apparently it did not occur to them that the environmental arguments they made against Malloy project could be turned against their circuit as well.

It should also be noted that while the SCCA’s San Francisco Region endured similar opposition during the planning stages for their track Thunderhill, near Willows, CA, northeast of the Bay Area, the local community now embraces the facility and the annual revenue increase it has meant for the region.
