This 1980 Crossle 2 litre sports racer, chassis 42S8008, was purchased new in May of 1980 by West Coast Crossle distributor, Crossle Cars Pacific, and ran 19 races in National SCCA competition on the west coast to mid 1983.
Drivers of note include Dennis Firestone, John Hearne and Jim Paul.
In 1984 the Crossle was sold to its current owner, Bill Fickling of P-1 Racing, with the intention of converting it to a road car.
First registered with the State of California DMV in 1990; it has remained licensed for the entire period since that time.
While great care was taken to maintain the original running gear and suspension so that it is easily converted back to competition spec should the racing bug bite, a number of improvements have also been added.
The engine has been upgraded to a 2.O.L. Cosworth YAC and the Hewland gearbox modified from 4 speed to 5 speed. The induction system has been changed from Weber carbs to programmable lumenition fuel injection.
A removable cab and engine cover addition allows the car to be either an enclosed coupe or open cockpit roadster.
A competition kit comes with the Crossle that includes a new set of Jongbloed Racing wheels, lightweight exhaust with tail mount, and other bits to easily make it a vintage racer or track day car. The tooling created to make the cab and engine cover fairing are also included.
It is registered as a specially constructed vehicle in the State of California and has an SB100 lifetime smog exemption, both of which are transferrable to the new owner, the same as any normal car title transfer would be.
The Crossle’s excellent mid-engine weight distribution and overall weight of 1200 lbs. make it a very unique and responsive road car driving experience.
Whether you want to vintage race it, track day it, show car it, or just go for a fun twisty road Sunday drive, it’s an absolute joy to own.
