One again it’s August and the classic and collector car auctions of Monterey Classic Car Week will soon be giving the industry its annual market check. It seems to be a year filled with an excellent selection of offerings over a broad range of eras and styles from all the major houses, highlighted by the very first examples of both Carroll Shelby’s Cobra and Dan Gurney’s Eagle racing cars. Those will both be offered by RM Sotheby’s, along with the Jaguar D-Type that won the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans,
Among the other notable cars crossing the various blocks will be the 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible that Ford built for Jackie Kennedy, the first roadcar version of the Ford GT40 delivered in North America and Jerry Eisert’s first Harrison Special Eisert Indycar (above), all of which will be on the docket at the Mecum Auction.
Russo and Steele are offering a matching-number early 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 with but 21,000 miles, a 1970 Corvette ZR1 and a rare 1959 Tojiero California Barchetta, while Rick Cole’s auction is featuring one of four 1963 Ferrari 330 LMBs ever built, as well as a Porsche 911S once owned and raced by Paul Newman.
For Bonhams’ sale at The Quail, among the top picks are a 1921 Stutz Model K Bearcat with 10,000 original miles, a 1904 Mercedes-Simplex 28-32HP 5-Seat Rear Entrance Tonneau and a 1931 Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix racer, while among the cars Gooding & Co.’s Pebble Beach Auction will feature are a 1959 Ferrari LWB California Spider, an early 1966 Cobra 427 and a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza.
