In one of the most closely fought sports car races of the fifties, Carroll Shelby (#98) in John Edgar’s 4.9-liter Ferrari managed to win over Phil Hill in George Tilp’s 3.5-liter Ferrari in the main event at Palm Springs on November 4, 1956. Off track, Hill and Shelby were the best of friends. Years later, Phil drove Cobras and GT40s for Shelby American.
